Westgate Energy Kicks Off Fall Campaign With 9,600 m Well

Westgate Energy has put its fall program turning to the right, with a record-length multilateral well now being drilled in central Alberta and a salvage operation under way on a promising but shut-in producer at a second property.

The Sparky Formation target at Killam is designed for roughly 9,600 meters of combined lateral, which would dwarf the 11-21 offset well that currently stands as the best performer in the field at about 5,400 meters of lateral.

Importantly for the field's long game, the new well is being built so that a waterflood could be layered on later without a redesign.

Work at Beaverdam follows a different logic, because the company is re-entering the C3S well and kicking it sideways.

The original C3S penetration met reservoir quality and oil shows comparable to the C2S horizontal, the strongest producer on the property, but a production liner failure choked off inflow and forced the well to be shut in.

The sidetrack is being drilled to run parallel to that C2S reference well, essentially replicating a proven design while leaving the damaged liner behind.

Both wells should be drilling through November, after which completion and tie-in work takes over, with first production targeted for late November 2026.

The company has also lined up a two-well program at Beaverdam for the first quarter of 2027 aimed at developing its Mannville Stack oil resource.

For engineers and procurement teams, this program packs several concrete equipment signals into two wells.

A multilateral of this length puts premium demands on junction tools, liner hangers and the drilling assembly itself, and suppliers of multilateral completion hardware should expect designs like this to spread across the Sparky play if the well delivers.

The C3S sidetrack is equally instructive, since liner failures are among the most common mechanical reasons horizontal producers get shut in, and the remediation path of whipstocking around the damaged interval keeps mills, whipstock systems and inflow-control hardware in demand across Western Canada's maturing horizontal fleet.

The waterflood-ready design is the quiet headline, because it pre-commits the surface and downhole kit to injection service, which typically means corrosion-resistant metallurgy, injection pumps and distribution valves specified for a duty cycle the well does not yet perform.

With first production due in late November, any completion and artificial-lift equipment still on order has an unforgiving delivery window, so late-stage vendors are effectively bidding against the calendar rather than against each other.

Buyers quoting into the Q1 2027 Beaverdam pair should also note that operators who announce programs a quarter ahead are already pricing their wellheads, trees and flowline packages, which puts suppliers in a bidding position now rather than at spud.
