GeoPark Wins Corralera Noreste Block in Vaca Muerta

Latin American producer GeoPark has added a fresh unconventional position in Argentina's Neuquen Basin, winning the Corralera Noreste block in the Ronda 1/2026 public bidding round run by provincial energy company Gas y Petroleo del Neuquen and setting up a two-well shale program in northern Vaca Muerta.
The award covers roughly 26,900 gross acres, or 24,200 net acres, close to Rincon de los Sauces, and it did not come cheaply in competitive terms, since the tender offered fifteen blocks and drew twenty offers from ten companies.
GeoPark emerges as operator holding a 90 percent working interest, with the provincial firm retaining the remaining 10 percent, fully carried by the new operator.
Nothing is final yet, because the award remains subject to execution of a joint venture agreement and approval by the Executive Branch of the Province of Neuquen.
The work commitments are specific and front-loaded.
Within the block's four-year initial exploration period, GeoPark has committed to drill and frack two horizontal wells, each designed with a 2,000-meter lateral and 30 frac stages, and an extended testing period will follow to establish well productivity and resource quality.
A declaration of commercial discovery would unlock a 35-year unconventional exploitation concession, and the block also carries an optional second four-year exploration phase.
The company already operates the neighboring Loma Jarillosa Este and Puesto Silva Oeste blocks in the same play, so this award consolidates an existing operating footprint rather than opening an unfamiliar one.
For engineers and procurement teams following the Neuquen shale service market, the commitment details matter more than the acreage headline.
A two-well program with 2,000-meter laterals and 30 frac stages per well translates directly into near-term demand for pressure pumping capacity, proppant logistics, plug-and-perf completion hardware and wellhead equipment rated for staged hydraulic fracturing.
Because both wells must be drilled and completed inside a four-year window, equipment orders and service contracts are likely to be concentrated rather than spread out, which rewards suppliers able to commit firm delivery schedules early in the cycle.
Unconventional service in northern Vaca Muerta generally calls for high-pressure wellheads, sand-tolerant choke and flowline hardware, and separation packages sized for early flowback, so specifiers should budget for abrasion service from day one.
The 35-year exploitation horizon attached to a commercial discovery also signals a long procurement runway, since compression, dehydration and gathering systems would follow any such declaration, typically in staged phases tied to production growth.
GeoPark's operated presence nearby shortens mobilization risk compared with a new entrant, and it gives vendors an existing reference point for negotiating frame agreements.
Bidders should note that the final award is not yet certain, because regulatory approval and the joint venture agreement must land first, so no equipment commitments should be treated as firm until those steps close.
