Saipem Lands $121M Eni Drilling Jobs Off Cyprus, Ghana

Saipem has booked approximately $121 million in fresh offshore drilling assignments from Eni, locking work for two of its most capable mobile rigs into the Mediterranean and West Africa through 2027.
The Italian contractor will send a fifth-generation drillship to Cypriot waters, while a sixth-generation semisubmersible takes up drilling duty offshore Ghana under the second award.
The Cypriot contract, placed by Eni Cyprus, covers drilling within the country's exclusive economic zone, with operations expected to commence between November 2026 and January 2027.
The drillship in question, the Saipem 10000, operates in water depths approaching 10,000 feet and can drill wells down to 30,000 feet, a capability profile that matches the deepwater gas frontier forming off the island.
That frontier has been built on successive finds such as Cronos, Calypso and Glaucus, and Eni is pressing ahead with exploration and appraisal there while fast-tracking development work to unlock regional gas supplies.
The second contract, signed with Eni Ghana Exploration and Production, assigns the Scarabeo 9 semisubmersible to drilling assignments offshore Ghana.
Engineered for punishing environments, the rig is rated for water depths up to 12,000 feet and carries a dual RamRig drilling system that allows parallel string handling and therefore faster well construction.
Ghana's offshore basins are mature yet still productive, hosting assets such as the Sankofa Gye Nyame field, which Eni operates.
Taken together, the two awards strengthen Saipem's visibility on fleet utilization across both 2026 and 2027.
For engineers and procurement teams, this package is a clean signal of where deepwater drilling demand is firming, and of the supply chain activity that follows.
The Cyprus campaign is the more urgent of the two, because a start window beginning in November leaves little slack for late equipment: drilling consumables, wellhead systems, casing accessories and mud program support all have to be sourced quickly, which favors vendors already holding Eastern Mediterranean track records and in-country logistics.
The rig's 30,000-foot drilling envelope likewise flags demand for high-pressure downhole tooling and HPHT-rated well control hardware rather than commodity gear.
The Scarabeo 9 assignment rewards a different kind of supplier, since its dual RamRig configuration with parallel string handling compresses days per well, and operators in mature basins such as Ghana increasingly award contracts on that efficiency rather than on day rates alone.
Rig upgrades of this type pull through demand for rotational control devices, top drive components and handling tool refurbishment, all of which are specified months before a campaign starts.
For second-tier manufacturers of pumps, valves and bulk process equipment, an operator strengthening utilization visibility out to 2027 usually means backfill orders for spares and scheduled maintenance kits are already being quantified, so quoting now positions suppliers ahead of the formal tenders that follow contract mobilization.
