The Wilkesboro water treatment plant recently received a “Gold Star” from the N.C.

Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources for surpassing federal and state drinking water standards in 2025.

The town was honored for receiving the N.C.

Area Wide Optimization Award for 10 or more consecutive years.

The award is part of a state effort to enhance the performance of existing surface water treatment facilities.

In a statement, Wilkesboro Town Manager Halee Ratcliff Smith said the town is “incredibly proud of our water treatment plant and utilities staff for earning this recognition.

Their dedication, professionalism and commitment to providing safe, high-quality drinking water often go unseen, but it is essential to our community’s quality of life.

“This award is a well-deserved reflection of the outstanding work they do every day for the citizens and businesses of Wilkesboro.” The Wilkesboro plant is directed by Sam Call.

Other “Gold Star” plants in counties adjacent to Wilkes were those in Boone and Mount Airy.
