Vestas and startup Neretek have agreed to jointly explore opportunities for offshore wind development in deeper waters beyond the limits of conventional fixed bottom foundations.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) “for deploying innovative foundation and turbine technologies together” to unlock the emerging Other Deep Water Offshore Wind (ODOW) segment in water depths ranging from 60-90 metres*.
Those depths are beyond the range of current monopiles or jackets but can potentially be exploited using hybrid foundations, avoiding the higher costs of fully floating wind.
“The offshore wind industry's next phase of growth will increasingly depend on our ability to deploy projects in deeper waters while maintaining the pace and scale required to meet energy transition objectives,” said Jonathan Cole, executive chair of Neretek.
“By exploring how innovative foundation and turbine solutions can work together, we can help create new pathways for development in deeper waters and support the emergence of the ODOW segment.” “Through this collaboration, we look forward to exploring opportunities where advanced turbine and foundation technologies can support the next generation of offshore wind projects and unlock new areas for development in deeper waters,” said Damien Lhors, global head of Offshore at Vestas.
Floating wind promises to unlock gigawatts of offshore wind capacity in deep waters but has struggled to gain traction amid stubbornly high costs.
