will install 4-mile long regional pipeline mainly in Fairfield and partly in Westport to upgrade the water system and align with state regulations.

(Courtsey of Aquarion Water Company) FAIRFIELD - Aquarion Water Co.

will install several miles of a new regional water pipeline to strengthen its water system resiliency across Fairfield County and align with state regulations.

The water company is working with AECOM, a Rocky Hill-based consulting engineering firm, to design a 36 inch-water main.

Work to install 23,250 feet of the regional water main pipeline is expected to begin in March 2027 starting at the southern end of the Hemlocks Reservoir on Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield to Coleytown Road in Westport.

"This pipeline will ensure an adequate public water supply, improve resiliency and allow us to meet reservoir release requirements for streamflow regulations," Aquarion spokesperson Peter Fazekas said.

The majority of this project will take place in Fairfield, totaling about 4.4 miles.

The pipeline installation is expected to be completed by 2028, with final road restoration anticipated to be completed in 2029.

We've done Wilton and New Canaan," Fazekas said.

"So it's a fairly long regional pipeline that we're building here." The work in Fairfield will cover several roads, including Hemlock Road, Burr Street, Aran Hill Road, Congress Street, Longmeadow Road, Redding Road and Catamount Road going into Westport.

Some streets will have detours, including Burr Street, Redding, Aran Hill, Catamount and Easton roads.

"We will continue to keep the community up to date as we're working through this project and to make it as less difficult as possible," Fazekas said.

"It's a big project." Aquarion's roughly 30-year-old regional pipeline will remain in service.

The new pipeline will increase the systems capacity to help the company comply with state streamflow regulations that begin taking effect in 2029.

Under those rules, Aquarion will be required to release substantially more water from its reservoirs to maintain minimum flows in rivers and streams while continuing to meet customers' drinking water needs, Fazekas said.

"This whole project is to ensure adequate supply for those releases and for customers' drinking water," Fazekas said.

"It builds resiliency into our water systems as well to have this capacity." The Fairfield-Westport segment is part of a larger regional pipeline project that Aquarion is completing in phases across Fairfield County.
