Africa’s first non-ferrous metal mining TBM – China Nonferrous Metals No.
2 – was jointly built by CRCC subsidiary China Railway Construction Heavy Industry (CRCHI) and China Metallurgical Corporation 15, with the companies also providing full-process technical operation and maintenance services.
During the trial excavation period this year from August 26 to September 25 at NFCA’s Chambishi copper mine in Zambia, the monthly footage exceeded 422.4 metres.
The maximum in a single day was 42.2 metres, and in a single shift it exceeded 22.2 metres, CRCHI says setting a new benchmark for intelligent excavation of hard rock mines in Africa.
In response to the extreme working conditions of the 1,000-metre deep underground operations of the Chambishi copper mine, the equipment R&D and service team studied and judged the construction difficulties in advance, focusing on multiple problems such as high hardness, fast tool loss in high quartzite layers, high underground temperature, and complex operating environment, and tailored the equipment accordingly.
An adaptation plan, from equipment structure optimisation, parameter debugging and special upgrades were completed in aspects such as working condition adaptation, allowing the equipment to be accurately adapted to hard rock excavation scenarios in African non-ferrous metal mines.
During the entire excavation process, the technical service team of CRCHI was stationed on site and involved throughout the entire process.
In response to the pain points of underground construction, the team says it accurately optimised a slag and gravel treatment system, upgraded the ventilation and cooling supporting facilities, and effectively impr Africa’s first non-ferrous metal mining TBM – China Nonferrous Metals No.

This was combined with the loss pattern of hard rock excavation, scientifically formulated tool replacement cycles, equipment maintenance and surrounding rock support plans, while ensuring the efficiency of continuous operation of equipment and taking into account the operational safety and construction experience of local employees.
