Meanwhile, South Korea has already committed $50 billion.

Trump characterized the deals as a significant economic boost for Alaska, with long-term demand and international investment helping underpin the project's financing and construction plans.

Exports from the $44 billion Alaska LNG project are expected to begin around 2030 or 2031.

A deal has been in the works since at least February of 2025, with Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy talking up the project in media for months last year.

Now that 6 million tons from Taiwan is the largest offtake in LNG history in terms of sales," Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy said previously.

The roughly $44 billion development would process natural gas on Alaska's North Slope, move it about 1,300 kilometers by pipeline to Nikiski in south-central Alaska, then liquefy it for shipment, primarily to Asian buyers.

The talks took a long time to come together amid wider U.S.-Taiwan trade friction, after the White House announced a 20% tariff on goods imported from Taiwan, higher than the 15% rate applied to imports from Japan and South Korea.

Dan Sullivan previously argued the Alaska LNG project also has strategic importance for Taiwan, Japan and South Korea as they look to diversify supplies, particularly with growing reliance on gas from Qatar.

Supporters of the Alaska deal say it could reduce geopolitical risk because shipments across the North Pacific can take around 10 days and avoid key chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Strait of Malacca.

Taiwan imported about 21 million metric tons of LNG in 2024, with 38% coming from Australia, 25% from Qatar and 10% from the U.S., according to its import data.
